WHITE HEAT by Brenda Novak
Romantic Suspense
Released on August 2010 by MIRA Books.
Rachel Jessop relishes the freedom and challenge provided by her job at Department 6. It is a vast improvement over her conservative and stifling upbringing by her domineering and fanatical father. Her newest assignment is to infiltrate a religious cult in Paradise, Arizona led by Ethan Wycliff. Rumors always abound where cult activity is concerned and a missing local girl adds to the gossip, but this time a woman has escaped the compound, and the stories she tells are chilling. Her personal history allows Rachel to understand the cult mentality, which in turn makes her the best candidate for infiltration. Unfortunately, she will not be going in alone. Her boss, Nate, will be posing as her husband, and that opens up a whole bunch of complications. Will she be able to pull off her end of the partnership? Will they be able to get onto the compound and up close and personal with Ethan?
Nate Ferrentino never treads lightly into an assignment, and he never gives anyone a responsibility that he is not willing to do himself. However, the assignment to infiltrate the cult came down from his boss, and he really does not like the position it puts him in. Nate has already made a mistake where Rachel is concerned, but he is willing to play his part as her husband. At least, she knows his true feelings, and that he is determined to keep his heart hardened against any relationships. Unfortunately, Rachel pushes all his buttons and tries his patience. He needs to stay focused since Ethan is a very dangerous man. Nate knows that Rachel is the bait to interest Ethan, and he has to be her husband so that he can be close enough to protect her if anything goes wrong. Will he be able to protect her from harm? Will they be able to put away Ethan and dissolve the cult without incident?
Brenda Novak blazes a steamy trail with the first book of her new trilogy. Nate and Rachel have a shared history that almost dooms their assignment before it begins, but their dedication to justice proves to be a bigger motivator. Ethan and the cult members are a formidable foe, and they have a very interesting plan in store for the new couple. This is the first Brenda Novak book that I have read, but it will not be my last. She engages the reader with multiple viewpoints, intense action, and mounting passion. WHITE HEAT delivers a satisfying suspenseful romance.
